Authorities attempt to legalize the seizure of Cherkasy's cathedral, - media

Cherkasy prosecutor's office demanded that city authorities transfer the cathedral to communal ownership.

The district prosecutor's office sent a request to the Cherkasy city council, stating that information about the owner of the cathedral complex is currently "absent". This was reported by the Telegram channel "Dozor".

The prosecutors are asking officials to "establish" the owner, and if the owner turns out to be "unknown" — to initiate the procedure of transferring the church to communal ownership.

At the same time, the text of the document itself acknowledges that the ownership right to the cathedral was officially registered under the Administration of the Cherkasy Eparchy of the UOC as far back as December 10, 2018. However, the agency refers to a Ministry of Justice order from March 2024, by which this record was annulled.

The organizers of the cathedral's seizure have been unable to find a legal loophole for its re-registration, and are therefore attempting to legalize the raiding through municipal structures.

As the UOJ reported, an activist who fired a shot inside the Cherkasy cathedral staged a provocation against a hierarch of the UOC.
