Zelensky revealed where a monument to Mazepa will be erected in Kyiv
A monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa will be installed on Shevchenko Boulevard in Kyiv – on the site where a monument to Lenin was demolished in December 2013.
On June 28, 2026, during the celebrations marking Constitution Day of Ukraine near the walls of the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa would appear in the capital, and named the location where it is planned to be installed.
According to the head of state, the «ideal location» for the monument «has existed since December 2013» – on Shevchenko Boulevard.
«Where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand firmly», – said Zelensky.
In addition, he announced that a bust of Mazepa, whom he called the «patron of the Lavra», will be installed on the grounds of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra itself. With this step, according to him, the authorities are «correcting a historical injustice».
Zelensky also reiterated the thesis that calling Mazepa a traitor is a «lie» which, as he claims, Russia has been spreading for centuries. He called the Hetman an «outstanding statesman and military figure, patron of the arts, and head of the Cossack state».
The announcement about the monument was made in the same speech in which the president announced a law on the «Ukrainian National Pantheon», a new state decoration «Order of Europe», and preparations for the 1000th anniversary of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
Earlier, the UCJ reported that Zelensky marked Constitution Day at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.
