Episcopal priest's claim that “God is transgender” sparks outrage in U.S.
An Episcopal Church priest’s unorthodox claims that God is “nonbinary” and that Christ appeared in His “transgender self” have sparked controversy.
Flourish Klink, a priest in the Episcopal Church in the United States, has sparked outrage among Christians after declaring during a sermon at the Church of Christ and St. Stephen in Manhattan that God is nonbinary and transgender, and that Jesus Christ is transgender. The New York Post reported on the controversy.
During the sermon, Klink, who identifies as transgender and a “nonbinary priest,” argued that God exists “beyond boy and girl.” According to Klink, the Virgin Mary mistakenly identified the Savior’s gender at His birth when she said, “Oh, look, a baby boy.”
Klink maintained that God was assigned a gender at birth and that denying God is transgender amounts to “denying the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Continuing the sermon, Klink claimed that Jesus Christ did not live the conventional life of a first-century man and that, after His Resurrection, He appeared to His disciples in His “true transgender self.”
“I think Jesus was not only transfigured; I think Jesus transitioned,” the priestess declared, while acknowledging, “I don’t know for sure. I wasn’t there.”
A clip of the sermon posted on X drew sharp criticism, with users accusing the priest of blasphemy. Commenters pointed to what they described as a direct distortion of Scripture, also recalling the Archangel Gabriel’s words to the Virgin Mary concerning the birth of a Son.
Community notes citing Gospel passages that contradict Klink’s claims were also added to the widely circulated post.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that a Roman Catholic priest in Italy had proposed creating a Nativity scene featuring a “baby girl Jesus.”
