LGBT Center Called on the AUCCRO to Recognize Gay Rights for the Sake of Ukraine's EU Accession
The organization "Nash Svit" addressed the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches following its visit to the EU Commissioner for Enlargement in Brussels on June 23.
The human rights LGBT center "Nash Svit" has called on the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (AUCCRO) to publicly support gay rights, emphasizing that this is a condition for Ukraine's accession to the European Union. The corresponding publication was posted on the Facebook page of the Nash Svit center.
The occasion for the appeal was the visit of an AUCCRO delegation to Brussels on June 23, 2026. At a meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, members of the delegation assured the European side of the support of Ukrainian churches and religious organizations for the course toward EU membership, citing the choice of the Ukrainian people "at two Maidans."
"The holy fathers from the OCU, the UGCC, the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, and the main Protestant associations should understand exactly what Ukraine is joining: a union of liberal-democratic countries where the fundamental values are respect for human rights, equality, and the prohibition of discrimination — including on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender. Accession to the EU is impossible without accepting these values and modern European standards in this area — in particular, the recognition and protection of the rights of same-sex family partners," the organization emphasized.
They also stated that the UOC "has removed itself" from participation in the AUCCRO.
Earlier, the SPJ reported that, according to Yelensky, the AUCCRO is ready to make compromises regarding LGBT issues.
