Church commemorates the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious
The faithful honor the saintly warrior who gave an example of unwavering fidelity to Christ.
On May 6 (April 23 according to the Julian calendar), the Orthodox world celebrates the memory of the Holy Great Martyr Saint George the Victory-Bearer. On this day, solemn divine services are held in churches in honor of the warrior-confessor who, through his martyrdom, demonstrated the triumph of faith over earthly power.
Saint George was born in Cappadocia into a noble Christian family. His father suffered martyrdom for Christ when the future saint was still a child. Entering military service, George quickly rose to the rank of commander thanks to his intelligence, courage, and strength, becoming a favorite of Emperor Diocletian.
Yet his brilliant career did not prevent him from remaining faithful to the Lord. When the ruler launched brutal persecutions against the Church, George distributed his possessions to the poor and openly denounced the emperor’s injustice.
The torturers tried to break the saint’s will through cruel torments: he was stretched on the wheel, cast into quicklime, and forced to run in boots lined with red-hot nails. After each ordeal, an Angel of the Lord healed the sufferer, and his steadfastness led even his enemies to faith.
Unable to force him to renounce Christ, Diocletian ordered George to be beheaded in the year 303. For his courageous witness to the Truth and his spiritual victory over the tormentors, the Church calls him the Victory-Bearer.
The saint’s most famous posthumous miracle was the deliverance of the daughter of the ruler of Beirut from a terrible serpent. Appearing on a white horse, George struck down the beast with a spear, leading many local pagans to embrace Christianity.
This image became a symbol of Christ’s triumph over the “ancient serpent” – the devil – and became firmly established in Orthodox iconography.
