Shevchuk: Demographic crisis can be solved – 60 million Ukrainians worldwide
UGCC head Sviatoslav Shevchuk said in a video address that his Church has become concerned about Ukraine’s demographic crisis.
According to him, Ukraine’s demographic problem can be solved because more ethnic Ukrainians live abroad than in the country itself.
He said that “the Ukrainian people are a transnational nation.”
“Today, 29 million Ukrainians live in Ukraine, but there are about 60 million of us worldwide,” Shevchuk said. According to him, awareness of the unity of the Ukrainian community not only within Ukraine but around the world is “an extremely important factor” in responding to demographic challenges.
Shevchuk did not explain exactly how the presence of Ukrainians around the world would affect the demographic catastrophe inside the country.
He called for efforts to encourage Ukrainians not to leave the country and to make them more willing to return after the war.
“The future of our people and the future of the Ukrainian state are truly being forged today,” the UGCC head concluded.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Shevchuk condemned Ukrainians who evade mobilization.
