Bulgaria to allocate €1.5 million for road to Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos
The Bulgarian government will finance repairs to the road leading to Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Bulgarian government has allocated €1.5 million to improve access to Zograf Monastery on the Holy Mountain. A section of the road connecting the port to the Bulgarian monastery will be renovated, orthodoxianewsagency reports.
The decision to provide capital funding for the continuation of the repair works was taken by the outgoing Bulgarian government. The authorities explained that improving transport accessibility will allow more pilgrims from Bulgaria and other countries to visit the shrine, which is included on UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage sites.
In November 2025, Zograf Monastery celebrated the feast of the Holy Great Martyr George. The service was led by Bishop Ioan of Branitsa, with the participation of the monastery’s abbot, Archimandrite Gabriel. A parliamentary delegation headed by the deputy chairman of the 51st National Assembly, Tsoncho Ganev, attended the celebrations.
As the UOJ previously reported, monks on Mount Athos expressed protest over the visit of Dumenko to the Holy Mountain.
