Archbishop of Cyprus: We stop responding to Bishop Tychikos' letters
The Archbishop stated that the Ecumenical Patriarchate will consider not only the appeal of Metropolitan Tychikos but also the arguments of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus.
On July 3, 2025, Archbishop of Cyprus Georgios stated that neither he nor the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus will respond to the letters of Metropolitan Tychicos of Paphos anymore.
Archbishop George sent a strongly worded letter to Metropolitan Tychikos of Paphos, stating that the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, as well as he personally, no longer intend to respond to his letters until the Ecumenical Patriarchate reviews his appeal.
The Archbishop noted that Metropolitan Tychikos has the right to attend the memorial service for his mother, which will take place on July 6, but he does not have the right to conduct services, as he has not received permission from the temporary administrator (i.e., the Archbishop himself) of the Paphos Metropolis.
The letter also states that the style of Metropolitan Tychikos's messages, their leakage to the media, and criticism of church decisions indicate his intention to undermine the authority of the Primate and the entire hierarchy of the Church of Cyprus.
The Archbishop also said that the Ecumenical Patriarchate will consider not only Metropolitan Tychikos's appeal but also the arguments of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus.
Regarding the memorial service for his mother, the Archbishop emphasized that Metropolitan Tychikos was granted permission to hold it on July 5, not July 6.
In conclusion, Archbishop Georgios stated that until the Ecumenical Patriarchate completes the review of the appeal, further letters and appeals from Metropolitan Tychikos will not be considered.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Metropolitan of Paphos Tychikos demanded permission for the memorial service for his mother in the main church of the village of Mesana and called on Archbishop Georgios for joint communion.
