Amsterdam: U.S. Government funded persecution of the UOC
The UOC lawyer stated that neither Christianity nor any other religion should be used to advance political agendas.
Robert Amsterdam, an international lawyer representing the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), stated in an interview with Jesus Christ’s CEOs TV that politicians are exploiting the religious situation in Ukraine for their own objectives.
In his opinion, "Freedom of religion is a touchstone that all too many companies and sovereigns don't place the proper weight on. Without there is no foundation for human rights and, by the way, there is no foundation for business rights. However, there is a loss of attraction in religious freedom nowadays."
"Unfortunately, in Ukraine, it was our own government that funded part of the oppression of the Church I represent. We must to make sure that government policies support religious freedom directly and not instrumentalize religion to advance foreign policy goals. I think that's incredibly important," the lawyer said.
According to him, neither Christianity nor any other religion or its followers should be used to "further a particular foreign policy goal."
"There is a universality to Christ and to religious teachings that should be followed. They are above the daily issues of corporations and politics. And we cannot politicize religion," Amsterdam emphasized. At the same time, he noted that "the U.S. government has made religion an aspect of foreign policy." However, he did not specify which administration he was referring to.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Robert Amsterdam would present a report in the United States on the persecution of the UOC.
