Polish Culture Ministry funds restoration of Armenian cathedral in Lviv
An international project supported by Poland aims to preserve the unique artistic heritage of the Armenian Cathedral in Lviv.
A Polish-Ukrainian team of restorers is carrying out the final stage of conservation work on the wall paintings and repairing the roof in the oldest part of the Armenian Cathedral in Lviv, with funding from Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
In the northern part of the cathedral sanctuary, specialists are reinforcing and cleaning ornamental murals by artist Jan Henryk Rosen, removing surface dirt and other deposits.
The conservation work, intended to ensure the murals can be viewed as a coherent whole while preserving surviving fragments of polychrome decoration, is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. This stage will bring together the results of restoration work carried out in previous years to preserve the sanctuary’s artistic heritage.
At the same time, restorers are repairing damage to the roof above the main nave discovered after heavy rains this summer. The work is being carried out by a team from the Association of Alumni of the Heritage Academy under the coordination of the POLONIKA National Institute of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad and the Cultural Heritage Protection Office of the Lviv City Council.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Poland will fund the restoration of a Catholic church in the Lviv region.
