A Mexican bishop stated that the Catholic Church is incomplete without the LGBT community.

Catholic Bishop Raúl Vera López declared at an LGBT conference in Mexico that homosexuality is not a sin. The bishop called for LGBT representatives to be admitted to leadership roles in religious communities, stating that without them the Church cannot be complete, reports Life Site News.

The address took place during the opening of the IV National Meeting of the organization "Red Católica Arcoíris" at the cathedral in the city of Torreón. Bishop of Saltillo Vera López delivered a homily at the Mass, which was presided over by the local ordinary Luis Martín Barraza Beltrán.

In his address, the bishop described homosexuality as a "natural phenomenon" rather than a perversion or a disease. In his view, homosexuals have the right to fully participate in Church life and to exercise spiritual leadership, and communities are obliged to accept them without any exceptions.

López's words provoked widespread outrage in Mexico. In response to the criticism, the bishop published a statement on the social network Facebook, where he once again reiterated his positions. He accused dissenting Catholics of backwardness, claiming that they are stuck in the traditions of the 2nd century, and are in need of education and a new heart.

Bishop Raúl López has long been known for his commitment to liberal reforms. In 2014, he baptized a child of a same-sex female couple, and also led organizations that advocated for the legalization of abortion. In 2025, López conducted a joint "worship service" with Anglican "priestess" Emily Teresa Smith, who is in a same-sex union.

As the UOJ reported, an RCC archbishop in Milan celebrated a Mass for the LGBT community.
