US Blocks Financial Aid to Nigeria Over Persecution of Christians

Legislators have banned the allocation of funds to Nigeria until real measures are taken to protect believers from violence.

The United States House of Representatives voted to fully block financial aid to Nigeria due to the persecution of Christians. This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria.

The lower chamber of the US Congress approved the fiscal year 2027 spending bill by 217 votes to 209. According to the document, Washington will restrict any aid to Nigeria until confirmation is received that Christian communities in the country are safe.

Initially, the bill envisaged withholding 50% of payments; however, lawmakers approved an amendment for a 100% cessation of funding, so as not to encourage a government incapable of protecting its own citizens.

The initiator of the tightened sanctions was Republican Jeff Stube. "American taxpayers should never fund governments that turn a blind eye to Christians being kidnapped, tortured, and killed," the legislator stated.

As the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported, Nigeria unveiled its first monument to Christians killed by Islamists.
