In Kyiv's Saint Sophia Cathedral, sensors have been installed to record missile strikes

UNESCO funded the installation of a monitoring system and the work of Italian specialists to protect the cathedral from vibrations.

The National Reserve "Sophia of Kyiv" has installed 28 seismic sensors with the support of UNESCO to record the impact of rocket attacks, explosions, and drone flights on the structural condition of the ancient cathedral. This was reported by Suspilne. Kyiv.

Specialists placed 20 sensors on the Saint Sophia Cathedral itself, and eight more on the complex's bell tower. UNESCO also funded the purchase of software and a data processing computer, and covered the work of Italian specialists who carried out the installation of the system.

According to the reserve's Director General Nelia Kukoválska, the sensors respond to any external vibrations — from rocket impacts to city traffic and mass concerts.

The data obtained will help engineers create a digital model of the monument's condition in order to reinforce the most vulnerable sections of the buildings in a timely manner. The equipment will also allow monitoring of earthquake tremors from the Vrancea zone in Romania, whose activity is expected to increase in the coming years.

As the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported, the head of "Sophia of Kyiv" was suspended over a wedding held in the cathedral on Good Friday.
