Patriarch Porfirije Called Serbs Killed in 1992–1995 "Martyrs"
Предстоятель Сербской Церкви подчеркнул, что память о мучениках является краеугольным камнем истинного мира. The Primate of the Serbian Church emphasized that the memory of the martyrs is the cornerstone of true peace.
On June 18, 2026, at the Patriarchate residence in Belgrade, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije received members of the Organizing Committee for the Perpetuation of the Memory of the Suffering of Serbs in Middle Drina and Birač. During the meeting, the Patriarch discussed preparations for the anniversary of the suffering of the Serbian people during the armed conflicts of 1992–1995. This was reported by Orthodoxia News Agency.
"A people that remembers its victims remains in unbreakable communion both with God and with truth," Patriarch Porfirije emphasized. According to the Primate, the prayerful remembrance of the fallen is inseparably linked to the spiritual life of the Church and holds enduring significance for society.
"The memory of 3,267 innocent Serbian martyrs does not belong to the past," the Primate noted. "It represents a living responsibility toward the future and is a structural element of genuine peace among peoples."
Representatives of the Organizing Committee presented the Patriarch with the program of events to be held on July 4, 2026, in Bratunac under the auspices of the highest institutions of the Republika Srpska. The organizers emphasized that the personal support of the Serbian Patriarch is of invaluable importance for the preservation of historical truth and the memory of the victims.
As the UOJ previously reported, Patriarch Porfirije said that the faithfulness of the people is more important than the number of pilgrims to the Belt.
