Georgian Church announces date of new patriarch’s enthronement
The enthronement of Patriarch Shio is slated for May 12 in Mtskheta.
The enthronement of the new Patriarch of the Georgian Church, Shio, will take place on May 12, 2026. The new primate announced this in his address after his election. On this day, Georgia celebrates the arrival in the country of Apostle Andrew the First-Called. He is especially venerated, and since 2003, May 12 has been a state holiday and an official day off.
The enthronement will be held at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta.
Recall that the new patriarch received 22 votes. Metropolitan Iob (Akiashvili) of Ruisi and Urbnisi received 9 votes, while Metropolitan Grigol (Berbichashvili) of Poti and Khobi received 7.
