Priest stabbed at ROC cathedral in Kalmykia
The attack on a cleric of the Kazan Cathedral in Elista was carried out by a man who, according to preliminary information, suffers from a mental illness.
On May 7, 2026, a man wounded a clergyman of the Russian Orthodox Church with a knife at the Kazan Cathedral in Elista. This was reported by TASS.
According to police, the suspect was detained at the scene and taken to a police station. Investigators of the Russian Investigative Committee’s department for the republic opened a criminal case over the attack on the priest.
The eparchy reported that the victim was Archpriest Anatoly Sklyarov, a cleric of the cathedral. As a result of the attack, he sustained a knife wound to the arm. The priest was hospitalized, and his life is not in danger.
According to the eparchy’s statement, the attacker is presumed to suffer from a mental illness, and his actions were linked to a distorted perception of reality and did not constitute an attack on believers or the Church.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that a court sentenced a participant in attacks on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
