A Spaniard convicted of a series of brutal murders has secured a transfer to a women's prison allegedly based on a change of gender identity.

In Spain, serial killer Joan Vila Dilmé, known as the "Angel of Death," was transferred to a women's prison after he declared himself a woman and began using the name "Aida." This is reported by lifesitenews.

The 60-year-old criminal was sentenced to 127 years in prison for murdering 11 people, committed in 2009–2010 at a nursing home in the Catalan city of Olot, where he worked. His victims were predominantly elderly and helpless people.

According to media reports, even during the trial, the defense referred to the defendant's gender dysphoria. Additionally, the lawyer initially tried to argue that the murders committed by Vila were merely examples of "merciful euthanasia."

"Vila told police that he killed his first eight victims either with an insulin overdose or a lethal cocktail of psychotropic drugs," the press reported at the time. "The last three died an agonizing death after being forced to drink bleach or other caustic liquids. There is evidence that he tortured some of them before killing them."

Currently, the killer has begun the process of changing his gender identity and is reportedly planning corresponding medical procedures.

It is also reported that the operations may be funded by the state healthcare system, with costs for his "transformation" potentially reaching 80,000 euros, which has caused a sharp reaction in society, especially among residents of the region where the crimes were committed.

As the UOJ wrote, in Scotland, activists are challenging the placement of transgender individuals in women's prisons.
