395 UOC churches damaged by shelling since start of war – report
An updated report on damaged religious sites over four years of war in Ukraine includes data on 395 affected UOC churches, as well as hundreds of destroyed or damaged facilities belonging to other denominations.
Updated statistics on religious buildings damaged during the war were published in February 2026. According to the figures, from February 24, 2022 to February 24, 2026, at least 742 cases of destruction or damage to houses of worship and other spiritual sites were recorded in Ukraine. The data were posted on the Facebook page of the Workshop of Academic Religious Studies.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has suffered the greatest losses. Since the start of the full-scale war, 395 UOC churches have been damaged by shelling – the highest number among all confessions listed in the report.
Protestant communities also sustained significant damage, with 194 prayer houses damaged or destroyed. In addition, the report records the destruction of 75 OCU churches.
The statistics also include 31 sites belonging to the Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic churches, seven mosques, 22 synagogues, 18 buildings of other religious communities, and 11 theological educational institutions. Overall, the damage affected many different confessions, pointing to large-scale losses to the country’s religious infrastructure.
The authors of the initiative stress that these figures are the minimum, since full monitoring in frontline areas and temporarily occupied territories remains difficult.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Nikopol was damaged by shelling.
