The head of the UGCC said that the current pontiff views the war in Ukraine as a key issue for Europe’s security.

The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, said that Pope Leo XIV recognizes Ukraine’s decisive role in the future security of all of Europe. He stated this during a meeting with journalists from Ukrinform.

According to Shevchuk, the current pontiff has a distinctly European vision of what is happening in Ukraine. “Today we have a pope who looks at Ukraine through the prism of the European situation. The Holy See’s international position is clearly European,” the head of the UGCC claims.

He claims that the pontiff has taken a clear position, emphasizing that “this is a war in Europe, and Europe must be a subject of the negotiations,” and that it is unacceptable to reach agreements about Ukraine without Ukraine’s participation.

“We have not heard such a clear and unambiguous position for a long time. Today, even at the level of the Holy See, Ukraine is understood as an integral part of the European context,” Shevchuk said.

The fact that the pope publicly mentioned the Constitution of Ukraine, the head of the UGCC assures, means that “with that one word he reminded the whole world of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state.” Pope Leo, Shevchuk said, is not guided by emotions or superficial impressions, but relies on a deep analytical and intellectual assessment of the situation.

“It is becoming ever clearer: without Ukraine, there can be no secure future for Europe. It is precisely here that the fate of Europe’s security is being decided,” the head of the UGCC is convinced.

As the UOJ previously reported, Pope Leo is considering Trump’s invitation to the Peace Council.
