Muslim kills Ukrainian teenager in Dublin over bacon and eggs, media reports
A Somali teenager attacked a 17-year-old Ukrainian, Vadym Davydenko, with a knife, allegedly seeing the cooking of pork as an insult to his religious beliefs.
According to Strana.ua, citing an Irish journalist, the incident occurred in a Dublin shelter for underage refugees. The Somali youth, who does not eat pork for religious reasons, reportedly stabbed his Ukrainian roommate when Vadym was frying eggs with bacon.
The tragedy happened on the morning of October 15 in the kitchen of a residence run by the state agency Tusla, where several minor migrants lived under supervision.
The quarrel erupted as Vadym was making breakfast.
“According to our police sources, the argument between the Somali and Ukrainian boys may have been over food. The Ukrainian was cooking eggs with bacon, which outraged the Somali, who for religious reasons does not consume pork. The Somali attacked him with a kitchen knife and simply butchered the boy, gouged out his eyes. He tried to fight back as best he could – his hands were covered in cuts, as were his head and chest,” Irish journalist Stephen Hand told Strana.
The attacker also tried to assault other residents of the center. A female staff member who attempted to intervene was stabbed as well.
When police arrived, the suspect barricaded himself in the bathroom holding a bloodstained knife. He was subdued with pepper spray and taken into custody.
Vadym Davydenko was originally from Kyiv. He had arrived in Ireland just a few days before his death, hoping to enroll in a university and study cybersecurity. His parents remain in Ukraine, while his older brother serves in the Armed Forces.
“He was very kind, fair, and caring. He had spent several months looking after his sick grandmother. He dreamed of studying and helping his family,” relatives said.
Irish authorities have assumed the costs of repatriating Vadym’s body to Ukraine.
This marks the second high-profile knife attack on Ukrainian refugees in recent months. In August, in the United States, a repeat offender of African descent murdered 23-year-old Ukrainian woman Iryna Zarutska on a train.
