On September 29, 2025, during the shelling of the city of Kherson, one of the shells hit the roof of the central altar of the Dormition Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Kherson Eparchy of the UOC reported on its Telegram channel.

According to the eparchy, at about 9:30 in the morning the Divine Liturgy was being celebrated in the church’s St. Nicholas chapel. Although clergy and faithful were present in the church, no one was injured. As a result of the impact, the roof of the cathedral was damaged, and destruction inside the altar area was recorded.

The service was temporarily interrupted, but after the shelling clergy and parishioners continued in prayer. The eparchy emphasizes that this is not the first time Kherson’s holy sites have been damaged as a result of military actions.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that a church in Malokaterynivka, Zaporizhzhia region, was damaged by shelling.
