Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel expressed hope for the reopening of the Halki Theological School, closed 54 years ago.

On September 29, 2025, in Thessaloniki, Greece, a meeting took place between Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, UOJ’s Bulgarian branch reported.

It is noted that the patriarchs discussed issues of an inter-Orthodox character. The primates also highlighted the centuries-old spiritual ties between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Orthodox Bulgarian people, and agreed on the importance of theological education in the modern era.

“Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel expressed hope for the reopening of the Halki Theological School, closed 54 years ago. The meeting lasted more than an hour and was held in an atmosphere of brotherhood and cordiality. At the conclusion, the two patriarchs exchanged symbolic gifts,” wrote the Bulgarian branch of the UOJ.

At the invitation of Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens, Patriarch Daniel is taking part in the Second International Academic Conference dedicated to the centenary of the journal Theology. At the forum, he will deliver a report on modern technologies, artificial intelligence, and their impact on human life.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Patriarch of Bulgaria explained why his Church does not recognize the OCU.
