At the 800th anniversary of Mesić Monastery, Patriarch Porfirije reminded the faithful that human laws are changeable, but the Law of God is eternal.

On 20 September 2025, festivities were held at the ancient Mesić Monastery in Banat to mark the 800th anniversary of the holy site. The Divine Liturgy was led by His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia, concelebrated by hierarchs and clergy, the Serbian Orthodox Church press service reported.

In his homily, the Patriarch emphasized that the foundation of the Serbian people’s existence, in all times, has been and must remain the Law of God and the Gospel of Christ. “Let the Law of God be the foundation of our existence, let the Gospel of Christ and the word of love be our ground and the base upon which we live and upon which we create all other rules and laws,” the Primate said.

He reminded the faithful that human laws are mutable and limited, whereas the Law of God is eternal – a law of love, mercy, and forgiveness that leads man to salvation and the fullness of life. According to the Patriarch, fidelity to Christ’s law testifies to the Serbian people’s belonging to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

The Patriarch also noted that Christians may suffer persecution and contempt precisely because they have chosen the Law of Christ, but the Cross and Resurrection of the Lord are the victory over death, sin, and corruption. In conclusion, he called on the faithful to preserve loyalty to the Gospel and to witness to the unity of the Church, as the holy ancestors of the Serbian people once did.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that Patriarch Porfirije opened the restored Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Croatia.
