Syrian authorities report that the attackers were members of the ISIS terrorist organization.

On June 22, 2025, during the Sunday Liturgy, two suicide bombers killed 15 Christians at the Orthodox Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in the Dweila district of Damascus.

One of the attackers opened fire on the worshippers before detonating an explosive-laden suicide belt.

According to Syrian officials, the attackers were affiliated with the ISIS terrorist group.

Preliminary reports state that 15 Orthodox Christians were killed in the attack. Many parishioners sustained severe injuries. Images circulating online show the destroyed church, with visible damage, bloodstains, and scattered liturgical books.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Synod of the Church of Cyprus had denounced the genocide of Christians in Syria.
