Trinity Sunday is also known as the Birthday of the Church.

On June 8, 2025, Orthodox Christians around the world celebrate one of the major Christian feasts – the Day of the Holy Trinity, also known as Pentecost. This feast is regarded as the Birthday of the Church.

The celebration is based on a Gospel event described in the Acts of the Apostles. According to Scripture, on the 50th day after Christ’s Resurrection, the apostles were gathered together in an upper room in Jerusalem. Suddenly, a sound came from heaven like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house. Tongues of fire appeared above the disciples, divided, and came to rest upon each of them. The apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues.

At that time, devout Jews from various countries were present in Jerusalem. Hearing the unusual sound, they gathered and were amazed to hear the apostles speaking to each one in his native language about the mighty works of God. The Apostle Peter addressed the crowd with a sermon about Christ, and that day about three thousand people were baptized, marking the beginning of the Christian Church.

It was from this moment that the apostles’ active missionary work began, and the Christian Church began to take shape.

Trinity Sunday concludes the Paschal cycle of the Orthodox liturgical calendar.
