Vatican: a chimney installed on Sistine Chapel for papal conclave

White smoke from the chimney will signal that a new Pope has been successfully elected.
Preparations are underway in the Vatican for the conclave, where the members of the College of Cardinals will elect the 267th Pope of Rome. As reported by the Director of the Vatican Press Office on May 2, 2025, a chimney has been installed on the Sistine Chapel, writes the vaticannews website.
The Sistine Chapel is closed to tourists. During these days, staff are preparing the space: adjusting the acoustics, setting up the floor, and carrying out other tasks. Unlike the meetings leading up to the conclave, there will be no simultaneous translation in the Sistine Chapel; the ceremony, including the cardinal's oath, will be conducted in Latin.
On May 7, during the conclave, the color of the smoke from the Sistine Chapel's chimney will signal the outcome of the cardinals' voting. White smoke will indicate that a new Pope has been successfully elected.
