Maidan in Varash “transfers” UOC church to OCU

A “people’s assembly” in Varash voted to “change the canonical and organizational subordination” of the UOC religious community.
On April 5, 2023, a “people’s assembly” held on Independence Square in Varash “transferred” the UOC church to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).
Varash Mayor Oleksandr Menzul referred to the gathering on the square as “a meeting of the religious community of the Transfiguration Cathedral parish of the Sarny Eparchy of the UOC regarding its transition to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.”
According to Menzul, a total of 1,015 people gathered, with 1,012 of them “voting” in favor of “changing the canonical and organizational subordination of the religious community by amending its statute.” Three people “abstained.”
Participants of the assembly also resolved to “approve the new version of the religious community’s statute, dissolve the current parish council, register the new version of the statute, and carry out state registration of changes to the community’s information in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities, Sole Proprietors, and Civic Organizations.”
Earlier, it was reported that a Catholic priest had prayed with Metropolitan Epiphanius at the altar of the OCU church in Varash.
