Analyst predicts Ukrainian nation could disappear within 50 years
The sharp deterioration of Ukraine’s demographic situation could lead to the disappearance of the nation within the next 50 years, Ukrainian analyst Oleksii Kushch said in a post on his Telegram channel.
He noted that about 240,000 children entered first grade in the current 2026/2027 school year, compared with more than 434,000 in the 2013/2014 school year. Over the same period, the fertility rate fell from 1.51 to 0.9. According to the analyst’s calculations, under the demographic conditions of 2013/2014, a new generation of about 13 million people could have produced more than 10 million children over 30 years, whereas under the current trend, a generation of 7 million will have fewer than 3 million children.
Kushch said that if current trends continue, the number of births will decline exponentially, and in just two generations the Ukrainian nation will effectively cease to exist. He stressed that the demographic crisis should become a priority for the country’s political elites rather than being approached on the principle that “there will be enough people for our lifetime.”
As the UOJ reported, experts have also previously warned of a critical decline in Ukraine’s birth rate and described preserving the family as a matter of national security. According to statistics from recent years, deaths in the country outnumber births four to one, while restoring Ukraine’s population to its 2022 level would require every Ukrainian woman to have eight children.
