Poland's Constitutional Court Declares Registration of Same-Sex Marriages Illegal
The judges unanimously overturned the Ministry of Digitalization's order recognizing same-sex unions.
The Constitutional Court of Poland has declared illegal the Ministry of Digitalization's order on the registration of foreign same-sex unions. This was reported by Polsat News.
Court President Bogdan Święczkowski announced the unanimous decision of a three-judge panel. Previously, the ministerial document allowed the entry of registration acts for non-traditional marriages contracted abroad by citizens to be included in the Polish registry.
A group of members of parliament blocked the officials' initiative through a court lawsuit in early June. Parliamentary representative Marcin Warchoł explained that the ministry's new rules grossly violate the constitutional definition of the family. According to him, the officials made an attempt to destroy the traditional understanding of marriage as a union of a man and a woman.
The ministry had planned to introduce new document forms on August 23. In the revised forms, instead of clear fields for a man and a woman, officials introduced general neutral wording. The court's verdict completely halted the introduction of these forms and protected traditional family values in the country.
As the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported, Senegal enshrined in its Constitution the definition of marriage as a union of a man and a woman.
