Head of the UGCC Compared Vatican Secretary's Visit to Moscow to the Descent into Hell
The head of the UGCC commented on the trip of the Vatican's representative to the Russian capital.
The head of the UGCC Sviatoslav Shevchuk compared the visit of the Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, to Moscow with the descent of Christ into hell. The leader of the Uniates called the Russian capital the underworld in his weekly video address. This was reported by the UGCC press service.
The Secretary of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, paid an official visit to the Russian capital from August 25 to 27, 2026. During the trip, the Vatican's representative held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Gallagher condemned the hostilities and conveyed Pope Leo XIV's appeal to sit down at the negotiating table.
Sviatoslav Shevchuk commented on the Vatican's diplomatic mission. "This visit can be compared to the descent into hell, when from the depths of hell a sermon on the resurrection of the dead is proclaimed," Shevchuk stated.
As the SPJ reported, the UGCC called the fire following the shelling of Moscow "the descent of the Holy Fire".
