The Georgian Prime Minister stated that the country's aspiration to join the European Union is based on the desire to be part of the traditional Western Christian world.

On August 18, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that the country's aspiration to join the European Union is based, among other things, on Christian faith. This was reported by SPJ in Georgia.

Kobakhidze linked the country's current European course to the civilizational choice made by King Irakli II. According to the Prime Minister, the ruler made a principled decision in the 18th century, based on religion and faith, by concluding the Treaty of Georgievsk with the Russian Empire.

The head of government noted that prior to this, Christian Georgia had for decades been in a vassal dependency on a Muslim state. He acknowledged that the alliance with the Russian Empire carried serious risks, which subsequently materialized, but called Irakli II's decision wise and without alternative.

According to Kobakhidze, this step allowed Georgia to preserve its people, Christian identity, and European culture. The Prime Minister emphasized that the modern country remains faithful to that same civilizational choice.

«We want to be part of the traditional Western Christian world, and it is on this, among other things, that our aspiration toward the European Union is based», – Kobakhidze stated, adding that integration into the European space is a continuation of Georgia's historical course.

Earlier, SPJ reported that the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament called the EU's attacks on the Church a «red line».
