Authorities in Kebbi organized a joint wedding for Christian and Muslim couples as an example of interfaith harmony.

The government of Nigeria’s Kebbi State held a mass wedding ceremony for 300 couples from both Christian and Muslim communities, Christian Daily reports.

The event took place on July 27, 2026, at Haliru Abdu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi. The program was designed to assist socially vulnerable people – including orphans, widows, and divorcees – who cannot afford wedding expenses. Unlike many similar initiatives in northern Nigeria, the Kebbi State authorities included Christian couples on an equal basis with Muslim participants.

Suleiman Argungu, chairman of the organizing committee, said there were no religious barriers in the selection process.

“There is no discrimination, provided the applicants fall within the approved categories of orphans, widows, or divorcees,” he stressed.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris said the event would be held annually throughout his term in office.

“I will continue to put more effort into this initiative to ensure that more less-privileged people benefit from it,” Idris said.

The joint participation of Christians and Muslims in the state program is intended to send an important message in a region where religious divisions often dominate the news. Organizers believe the initiative will help strengthen social stability and serve as an example of compassion amid ongoing hardship.

As the UOJ previously reported, financial assistance to Nigeria was blocked in the United States over the persecution of Christians.
