Four years after a UOC church was demolished in Ivano-Frankivsk, the city opened a public park on the site instead of the promised kindergarten and school.

On August 1, 2026, a public park was opened in Ivano-Frankivsk on the site of the demolished Transfiguration Church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 6 Viacheslav Chornovil Street, ZAXID.NET reported.

The site now features a children’s playground, benches, litter bins, and surveillance cameras. Employees of a municipal utility company will be responsible for maintaining the new public space. The project cost UAH 5.7 million.

Some residents criticized the project for its lack of shade and the large expanses of exposed paving. In the comments, people described the park as “a frying pan under the blazing sun” and “a tanning salon saturated with exhaust fumes.” Residents noted that the newly planted trees would not provide proper shade for another 10 to 15 years.

Ivano-Frankivsk Mayor Ruslan Martsinkiv said that enough trees had been planted and that additional shrubs might be added in the autumn. According to him, the plants will grow over the next year or two, changing the appearance of the park.

The UOC Transfiguration Church had stood at the site since 2006 and was demolished by the city authorities in February 2022. At the time, officials said the land had to be cleared to restore a kindergarten. The mayor’s office later announced plans to build an elementary school there.

Neither project was ever implemented. More than four years after the church was demolished, a public park has now opened in its place.

As previously reported by the UOJ, the Ivano-Frankivsk authorities abandoned plans to build the school for which the UOC church had been demolished.
