In Brazil, parents detained for homeschooling without gender ideology
A São Paulo court deemed it negligence to homeschool children without gender ideology and sentenced the parents to 50 days in jail.
On June 23, 2026, it was reported that in Brazil, spouses Adauto and Ieda Denardi were sentenced to 50 days in jail for homeschooling their daughters without including gender ideology in the curriculum, reports The European Conservative.
A São Paulo court found the parents guilty of "intellectual neglect." According to the court, the girls' homeschooling program did not include topics related to "gender and sex education," as well as "tolerance and diversity."
The couple's daughters, aged 15 and 11, have been educated at home since 2020. According to the defense, the girls speak several languages, play the piano, and follow a strict daily study schedule.
The parents said they switched their children to homeschooling after experiencing remote learning during the pandemic, which left them disappointed with the public education system. According to the family, the girls' academic performance improved afterward, and their education became more consistent with their faith and family values.
The prosecutor recommended that the couple be acquitted, and an independent educational psychologist found no evidence of child neglect. The defense stated that the Denardis became the first parents in Brazil to receive a criminal conviction for homeschooling. Enforcement of the sentence was suspended pending the outcome of the appeal.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Czech government opted out of the Istanbul Convention over "gender ideology."
