Muslim students in Germany force classmates to observe Ramadan, media report
Teachers have reported cases of fatigue and conflict among students, many of whom are fasting despite Islam’s age-related exemptions.
Islam has become a subject of public debate in Austrian society following reports from educators about difficulties during Ramadan in the country’s schools, UOJ in Germany reports.
According to teachers, some Muslim students abstain from food and water from dawn to sunset, resulting in drowsiness, headaches, and loss of concentration. Several cases of fainting and weakness have been recorded during physical education classes and lessons. Some schools have also seen conflicts among children – students who are fasting are demanding that others observe the fast as well.
According to Austrian teachers’ associations, social pressure among teenagers is intensifying. In a number of schools, informal groups of “monitors” have emerged, watching to make sure their peers do not eat or drink during the day. Representatives of teachers’ unions warn that such developments can disrupt the educational process and create an atmosphere of tension in the classroom.
As the UOJ previously reported, an Austrian woman was nearly beaten for making a remark to a Muslim woman wearing a burqa. In recent years, questions surrounding the integration of the Muslim population and the observance of religious practices in public institutions have regularly become the subject of debate in Austrian society.
