Metropolitan Onuphry reads Great Canon at Intercession Convent of Kyiv
The Primate of the UOC led the Great Compline with the reading of the second part of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete at the capital's Intercesssion Convent.
On February 24, 2026, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry led the Great Compline with the reading of the second part of the Penitential Canon of St. Andrew of Crete at the Intercession Convent in Kyiv, reports the UOC press service.
The Compline was performed on the second day of Great Lent in the monastery's St. Nicholas Cathedral. The nuns, parishioners, and pilgrims prayed together with the Primate.
"The traditional daily cycle of Lenten services consists of Great Compline, Matins, Hours, Typika, and Vespers. During the first four days of Great Lent, the Great Canon of Saint Andrew of Crete is read during Vespers. Although several Christian writers contributed to its creation, the canon is named after the author of the original text. The Canon is called Great not only for its unusual length (about 250 troparia), but also for its poetic perfection, theological depth, and the emotional expressiveness of the depicted feelings,” the UOC press service says.
As the UOJ reported, on February 23, 2026, His Beatitude led the reading of the Great Penitential Canon at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
