Ukraine should allow same-sex marriages for EU accession, European Commission
Brussels has stated that it expects Kyiv to adopt a law on legal recognition of homosexual unions.
The European Union has confirmed its intention to demand that Ukraine adopt a law on legal recognition of same-sex marriages. This is stated in a letter sent in response to an appeal from Ukrainian LGBT organizations, reports catholicnews.
The Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission stated that Kyiv is obligated to bring national legislation into compliance with the legal norms of the European Union, including the provisions of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
«We highly value the work of your civil society organizations advocating for fundamental rights and equality for LGBTIQ+ persons in Ukraine. As Ukraine advances on its path to EU membership, it is crucial that its legal framework aligns with European standards enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights, including respect for private and family life and the prohibition of discrimination on any grounds, including against LGBTQ+ persons, in accordance with the LGBTQ+ Equality Strategy for 2026–2030," the letter reads.
The document also asserts that Ukraine must adopt a law ensuring "legal recognition and protection of same-sex couples" in accordance with the European Court decision in the case "Maymulahin and Markov v. Ukraine".
Brussels promised to monitor the fulfillment of this obligation and stated its intention to discuss the draft of the new Civil Code with Ukrainian authorities within the framework of working meetings.
As the UOJ reported, the European Parliament refused to recognize that only women can become pregnant.
