Greek Church bishops criticize EU plan to finance abortions
Representatives of the Church of Greece stated that the EU initiative to support abortions is leading Europe to demographic decline.
On December 30, 2025, hierarchs of the Church of Greece criticized the European Union's initiatives that provide for the funding of abortions at a pan-European level, warning of the severe demographic consequences of such policies, reports the Greek news portal Vima Orthodoxias.
The statements were prompted by recent decisions of the European Parliament, which, according to church hierarchs, go beyond social reforms and reflect a systemic ideological course. The Church asserts that these measures shape a model of "Europe without children".
The hierarchs emphasize that in the context of rapid population aging and declining birth rates in EU countries, priority is given not to supporting family and motherhood, but to funding abortions, which is being established as a societal norm.
It should be recalled that on December 10, the European Parliament approved the European Citizens' Initiative to create a special fund for abortion payments. The document was supported by more than 1.12 million citizens from at least seven EU countries, and the vote concluded with 358 votes in favor and 202 against.
The final decision on the initiative is to be made by the European Commission, with consideration expected in March. The Church of Greece emphasizes that this is not a private social issue, but a choice that will determine the demographic future of Europe.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that human rights organizations believe that Brussels' initiative to fund abortions violates the sovereignty of EU countries and exceeds the powers of EU institutions.
