European Parliament approves creation of EU fund to finance abortions
The decision provides for the allocation of EU budget funds to cover the cost of pregnancy termination abroad for women from countries with legislative restrictions on abortion.
On December 17, 2025, the European Parliament, at a plenary session, supported an initiative on accessible abortion to establish a pan-European fund to finance abortions for women from countries with limited access to the procedure, according to the European Parliament’s press service.
The proposal was supported by 358 members of parliament, while 202 voted against it. The document provides for the possibility of free termination of pregnancy in another EU member state for women residing in countries with strict legislative restrictions.
The initiative concerns the civic campaign “My Voice, My Choice,” which envisages the creation of a special fund financed from the EU budget. It is intended to be used to cover expenses related to abortions carried out outside a woman’s country of residence.
Among the states whose citizens would be able to make use of this mechanism are countries with an almost total ban on abortions, such as Malta and Poland, as well as countries where access to the procedure is severely restricted, including Italy and Croatia.
The initiative has become the subject of debate within the European Parliament and has received differing assessments from members of parliament and public organizations.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Meta had begun mass blocking of accounts over content related to abortion and LGBT issues.
