A fire completely destroyed a monastic residential building of the Protection Monastery in the village of Kostryna.

On December 10, 2025, a fire broke out on the grounds of the Protection Monastery of the UOC in the village of Kostryna in the Uzhhorod district of Zakarpattia region, the Mukachevo Eparchy reported.

The fire completely destroyed the monastic residential building – a one-story wooden structure with an attic, which at the time was unoccupied.

The fire was noticed by clergy, who immediately ran to the site and called rescuers.

Firefighting units from Velykyi Bereznyi, Perechyn, and Uzhhorod, as well as volunteer firefighters from the village of Volosianka, were involved in extinguishing the blaze. Despite the absence of access roads and water sources, rescuers laid out trunk lines and organized water intake from a local pond. The fire, which covered an area of 170 square meters, was brought under control in two and a half hours.

There was no threat to the nearby Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, which is an architectural monument.

The cause of the fire has not been stated. The abbot and the brethren of the monastery are asking for assistance in restoring housing for the monks.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that an arson attack had been committed at the Bancheny Monastery.
