Leadership of Ukrainian Muslims сomplains about SBU actions
The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Ukraine “Umma” expressed indignation over document checks at a mosque, calling the SBU’s actions harmful to society.
On November 28, 2025, the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Ukraine “Umma” (SAMU) voiced strong dissatisfaction with actions taken by SBU officers who that day conducted “security measures” near the organization’s main mosque. Officers of the security service checked the documents of believers heading to the obligatory Friday prayer, which impeded access to the mosque.
The League of Muslim Women of Ukraine was outraged that “Muslim women were also stopped, questioned, and in some cases asked to hand over their phones so that the contents could be examined.”
“According to eyewitnesses, the individuals conducting the ‘inspection’ did not present service IDs, did not provide their names, and offered no legal justification for their demands. In fact, this appeared as forceful pressure on the community,” the Muslim women complained.
“Umma” recalled that before the war with Russia “there were instances when certain not-so-decent figures accused the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Ukraine ‘Umma’ of ties to extremist organizations,” but emphasized that after the invasion Muslims have demonstrated their patriotism.
“Our core principle is working in the interests of Ukraine and the Muslims of Ukraine. We have no organizational ties with any foreign organizations,” the SAMU “Umma” leadership affirmed.
The organization considers such SBU actions “overtly harmful to Ukrainian society and to our state’s image on the international stage.” According to SAMU, the practice of conducting such operations in mosques during worship services is widespread in the aggressor state and “dishonors the memory of all Muslims who have already given their lives for Ukraine.”
As a reminder, Orbán recently stated that in the war in Ukraine Christians are being destroyed against the backdrop of Islamization.
