UOC Chancellor: Authorities are trying to break Bishop Arseniy, it is impossible
Metropolitan Antony stated that it is physically possible to undermine the health of the bishop, but his spirit cannot be broken. He called for prayers for the detained hierarch.
On November 4, 2025, the UOC Chancellor, Metropolitan Antony, addressed the faithful in a sermon, urging them to pray especially for the health of Metropolitan Arseny of Sviatohirsk. The day before, the court had extended the bishop’s detention for 38 days.
"Humanly, we cannot find an explanation for why this is happening, why both the law and humanity, just normal human relations, are being disregarded," said Bishop Antony.
According to him, the authorities are trying to break Metropolitan Arseniy. "We understand that yes, physically, the health of Bishop Arseniy can be undermined, but his spirit cannot be broken. He is a deeply faithful person devoted to the will of God," emphasized the UOC Chancellor.
Metropolitan Antony highlighted that Bishop Arseniy did nothing illegal in his life, only worked for the benefit of the Church of Christ and adorned the land with many churches that now grace Donbas.
Drawing a historical parallel, the clergyman quoted ancient philosophers: "Martyrdom, the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians". He recalled the persecutions in the first half of the 20th century, when almost all bishops were murded or imprisoned and exiled, but it was precisely the devotion to faith that helped the Church to stand firm.
"The entire Church is now looking at his strength, his courage, his weakened health. But it is precisely in such a state that the human spirit often grows manifold," noted Metropolitan Antony.
He urged the faithful to pray for Metropolitan Arseny, asking the Lord to grant him health, patience, and the courage to endure all trials.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Metropolitan Arseniy was again put behind bars.
