Presentation of Antiquary magazine hosted at seized Chernihiv cathedral
Authorities say the Transfiguration Cathedral should not be seen only as a spiritual shrine.
On October 23, 2025, officials held a presentation of a special issue of the cultural magazine Antykvar (Antiquary) in the Transfiguration Cathedral of Chernihiv – a church previously seized from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).
According to the Chernihiv Ancient reserve administration, the issue features scholarly articles and photographs of the cathedral. They emphasized that “the publication includes the latest research and new narratives that help to view the Spas (Transfiguration Cathedral) more broadly, without limiting its meaning to that of a spiritual shrine.”
“This work serves as powerful evidence that Ukraine has more than a thousand years of history. It underscores the importance of cultivating our identity and our unwavering struggle for sovereignty,” said representatives of the reserve.
What connection an Orthodox cathedral has to the history of the Ukrainian state and its struggle for sovereignty, the organizers did not specify.
The presentation included an art exhibition and a performance by bandurists.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the authorities had repurposed the confiscated Transfiguration Cathedral for film screenings.
