In UK, over 2 million signatures collected against digital ID introduction
The authors of the initiative demand that the government abandon plans to launch a mandatory digital identification system for citizens.
On October 2, 2025, a petition against the introduction of digital identity cards gathered over 2 million 850 thousand signatures on the official website of the UK Parliament.
It is noted that the petition exceeded the threshold of 100 thousand signatures required for consideration in Parliament. Politicians, public figures, journalists, academic circles, and various organizations opposed digital identification.
The authors of the initiative demand that the government abandon plans to create a mandatory digital identification system for citizens, considering it a threat to personal freedom and a step towards total control.
The petition says “no one should be forced to register with a state-controlled ID system”, which it describes as a “step towards mass surveillance and digital control”. The nationwide slogan is: "Any acceptance of digital identity will be your last free choice."
Journalist and political scientist Lauren Smith emphasized in her publication that digital identification could turn into an internal "passport" of everyday life, necessary not only for work but also for access to housing, banking services, and even participation in public events.
Observers note that the British initiative could become an example for other countries in Europe, where the introduction of a unified digital super-identity is being discussed.
