Patriarch Kirill proposes to establish Council of Religions at UN
Patriarch Kirill noted that the Council at the UN would strengthen the peacekeeping potential and become a platform for interfaith dialogue.
On September 17, 2025, at the VIII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' proposed the creation of a Consultative Council of Religions at the United Nations. This was reported by Sputnik Kazakhstan.
«The idea of creating a Consultative Council of Religions at the UN has not lost its relevance. Our joint voice, considering our belonging to different nations and religions, could become a voice of conscience and reconciliation," said Patriarch Kirill.
He noted that believers around the world are carriers of centuries-old religious culture based on mutual respect, peace, and cooperation: "Thanks to this, representatives of different religions and nationalities live peacefully, particularly in Russia and Kazakhstan, and work together for the benefit of their countries and peoples," emphasized the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Patriarch Kirill also drew attention to the growth of religiosity among young people in the post-Soviet space: "We see more and more young people in churches, mosques, synagogues, and datsans. Youth must be supported and protected from radicalism, directing them towards the path of dialogue and respect," he stated.
The head of the ROC supported the idea of holding interfaith youth forums, which provide young believers the opportunity to communicate directly rather than through biased social networks.
It should be noted that the VIII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions is being held in Astana under the theme "Dialogue of Religions: Synergy for the Future". More than 100 delegations from 60 countries are in attendance.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Сongress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions started in Astana.
