The Ukrainian military will now take into account the religious dietary needs of Muslim and Jewish service members.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has approved an updated technical specification for daily field rations. Under the new regulations, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) will now procure not only standard rations, but also halal and kosher meal packs.

Halal rations are intended for servicemen who observe Islamic dietary laws, while kosher rations are for those practicing Judaism. This initiative is part of building a “human-centered army” that respects the religious needs of its personnel.

According to the requirements, the contents of halal rations must comply with Islamic dietary laws and be certified by an accredited body authorized to certify food products either in Ukraine or in Arab-Muslim countries. The kosher rations must meet the standards of kashrut and contain no ingredients prohibited by Jewish dietary laws.

“We are working to ensure that nutrition in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is not only balanced, but truly human-centered – reflecting the beliefs, religious practices, and personal preferences of every soldier,” said Halyna Litosh, Director of the Food Program at the procurement agency "State Logistics Operator."

The Ministry of Defense acknowledges that the production of such specialized rations requires additional resources and consideration of specific food preparation technologies.

There was no mention of introducing fasting-friendly rations for Orthodox Christians.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that the head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, celebrated Purim with members of the Jewish community.
