Estonia declares Moscow Patriarchate an institution backing RF’s aggression
The Riigikogu stated that Orthodox parishes should independently assess the threat and take the necessary steps to sever ties with the Moscow Patriarchate.
On May 6, 2024, Estonia’s highest representative and legislative body – the Riigikogu – adopted a statement condemning the activities of the Moscow Patriarchate for justifying and supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and formally declared it an institution that backs the Russian Federation’s military aggression, according to ERR.
“The appeals of the Moscow Patriarchate conceal a threat to the security and existence of Estonia, including a direct threat to public and constitutional order in the country,” the statement says.
At the same time, the Riigikogu emphasized that the decision concerns the Moscow Patriarchate as an institution and its governing structures – not individuals who adhere to the traditions of Orthodox Christianity.
Lawmakers stated that “Orthodox associations and parishes must independently assess the threat to public order and to their members arising from hostile influence activities, and take the necessary steps to sever ties with the Moscow Patriarchate.”
“In the Republic of Estonia, the constitutional right to freedom of religion must be preserved, with due regard for the rights and freedoms of all those living here,” the parliamentarians added.
As previously reported, Estonia’s interior minister visited the Pühtitsa Monastery to urge it to withdraw from the Moscow Patriarchate.
