Secret rebellion against spiritual death and dictatorship of thoughts
Earthly vanity turns people into prisoners of obsessive thoughts. Christ's High Priestly Prayer reveals the only path to escape from this deadly sleep.
The Gospel reading of the seventh week after Pascha immerses us in the depths of the great mystery revealed to us in the High Priestly Prayer of the Savior. Christ speaks of Eternal Life as the knowledge of the One True God. What does our present life represent? We commonly refer to our daily bustling movement as "life"; but from the perspective of Eternity, this is a journey in the land of the dead. We dwell in a dungeon where the walls are built from our attachments, and the bars – from our passions.
In the mirror of our soul, the empty sockets of a blind heart are reflected. We are bound hand and foot by the chains of egoism, but the most terrifying part is that we have learned to admire these chains. Forgetting God, most people have become prisoners to the 'spiders' of obsessive thinking. Every empty thought of ours, every piece of gossip, every judgment is a sticky thread from which the shroud of our soul is woven. We have become easy prey for the parasites of the mind, which suck the energy of the Spirit out of us, leaving behind only the grey dust of sinful habits.
The trap of illusory earthly existence
The Lord calls us: "Let the dead bury their own dead." This is a radical call to leave the land of dust and corruption. But no one will simply deprive us of citizenship among the spiritual dead. The path to resurrection begins with sacred hatred for our sinful "ego". When the soul realizes the stinking staleness of its egocentrism, when it "spits in the face" of its own self-pity, then a formidable weapon appears in its hands. This is the sledgehammer of Christ-like humility.
The world considers humility weakness; but in the mystical sense, it is atomic energy of enormous grace power.
Humility is the only weapon capable of shattering the diamond shackles of pride. When our mind falls silent, acknowledging its utter helplessness before the abyss of evil, the Holy Spirit steps in.
Theoretical knowledge of theological truths will not save us without spiritual practice. It is merely a treasure map in the hands of a godless man. True life begins when the inner eyes of the spirit are opened. When a person steps beyond the bars of fruitless mental constructs, they sail out into the vast expanses of the ocean of the Holy Trinity's love. God’s love is not an emotion; it is the very substance of being. It is the 'Living Water' that transforms a biological specimen into a Son of God.
Humility breaks pride
Our salvation is a narrow tightrope stretched over the abyss of non-existence. On the left are demons, whispering to us about our rights and grievances. On the right are angels, calling us to the heights. Ahead is Christ, holding out His hand to us and saying, 'Come, do not fear.' Whichever way your heart sways, that is where we will end up. It is impossible to carry even a single dark thought through the gates of paradise in the pocket of one's soul. What you think about today will become your guard or your deliverer tomorrow, upon the paths of the toll-houses.
Your main enemy is not the devil. The devil is merely a jester dancing on the ruins of our will. Our main enemy is ourselves when we choose the comfort of sinful sleep instead of the pain of awakening.
If we do not want to meet the black eyes of eternal death face to face, let us begin accustoming ourselves to the Jesus Prayer right now. Let it become our inner torch that will not be extinguished when the soul is separated from the body. Those who succeeded before us in crossing this tightrope of salvation over the abyss of eternal destruction left behind a simple yet priceless guide of immeasurable significance.
Five rules for salvation of the soul
- Cast all your care upon God.
- Judge no one and justify yourself in nothing.
- Do not enter into disputes and prove nothing to anyone.
- Leave behind 'idle thoughts' and rely on the staff of prayer.
- Go quietly, bearing your cross with love.
Only thus, by developing a pure heart rather than a sophisticated mind, we will be able to maintain our balance and enter the Heavenly mansions, where there is neither death nor the cobweb of thoughts, but only the endless Light of Truth.
We commonly measure life by years, but true life is measured by the degree of our participation in the Source.
Biological existence without connection to God is a "horizontal decay" stretched out over time. Death occurs not when the heart stops beating, but when the heart ceases to respond to the call of Eternity. We either come alive in spirit during the life of the body, or we die completely in spirit even before physical death.
Liberation from the dictatorship of the mind
Our main captivity is not external circumstances but the dictatorship of thoughts. We have identified ourselves with our "noise in the head," turning consciousness into a dump of others' opinions and our own passions. Freedom begins with distance. Prayer is an act of separating oneself from one's "parasitic self." Only when "the mind quiets," does a person first meet his real self – that image of God which was buried under layers of social dust.
Only by breaking the "diamond shackles" of pride and egocentrism, a person acquire his true scale, becoming a conductor of Divine energy.
If during life we accustom ourselves to breathe the atmosphere of Love, then the transition beyond the boundary of earthly life will become for us a natural entrance into the realm of Light. If we feed on the darkness of condemnation and the rot of egoism, then the Light of Christ will become an unbearable fire of eternal torment for us.
Our “tomorrow” grows out of our “today.” Eternity is not something that comes after time; it is that which permeates time here and now. Every thought of ours is either a brick in the wall of a prison or a step on the ladder to Heaven. In the end, there are only two trajectories of being: the path of self-devouring within the solitude of one’s own “I,” and the path of self-offering into the embrace of the Creator. And everything that surrounds us is merely scenery for this ultimate choice. When the curtain of time falls, the only thing that will remain is that which cannot be burned or stolen – the quality of your love and the stillness of your humility.
Christianity is not a set of prohibitions, but a practical guide for returning to oneself. We often seek the causes of our troubles in surrounding people or difficult times, but true freedom or slavery are always born within our consciousness. The quality of life depends on whom we are connected with. If our attention is occupied only with everyday questions, we gradually lose taste for the spiritual.
Real life begins where a person ceases to be simply a "biological machine" and begins consciously to restore his relationship with the Creator. What happens to us after death is not a random decision from above. This is a direct result of what we filled our soul with each day. Each choice in favor of good or evil is an investment in our eternal state.
The most dangerous enemies are not external problems but the endless flow of useless ideas and criticism in our head. While we believe every fleeting desire of ours, we do not belong to ourselves. Real strength manifests in the ability to be silent in time and listen to the voice of conscience.
One can read hundreds of books about faith but remain the same. Spiritual growth occurs only when knowledge transforms into concrete actions: when we choose to forgive instead of taking offense, or to remain silent instead of arguing. We do not need to wait for the end of the world to meet God or face the consequences of our mistakes. We are already in this process. What we accustom our heart to today will become our only reality tomorrow. Salvation is not a reward for good behavior but the result of long and honest labor in purifying one's heart.
