Residents of Kyiv's Obolon District Demolished the Fence at the UGCC Temple Construction Site
In Obolon, local residents have long been fighting against the construction of a Uniate church.
Residents of Kyiv's Obolon district demolished the construction site fence of a UGCC church on Pivnichna Street. This was reported by representatives of the Uniate parish in a statement dated July 27, 2026.
The standoff over the plot on Pivnichna Street has been ongoing for several months. The Greek Catholics claim that the land was transferred to the community for permanent use by a decision of the Kyiv City Council, and on this basis had previously attempted to begin construction. However, the works were repeatedly halted due to protests by local residents, and then resumed despite the continued resistance of those opposed to the project. Meanwhile, an initiative group of Obolon residents collected signatures on a petition against the development of the plot, insisting on its illegality.
According to the Uniates, on July 23, 2026, the parties to the conflict reached another agreement: the construction company and the parish would halt all works until a meeting at the district state administration, while opponents of the project would refrain from forceful actions. Nevertheless, shortly thereafter, the construction site fence was demolished.
As the SPJ previously reported, the OCU had earlier accused the UGCC of violence and seizures of Orthodox churches. No independent assessment of the Obolon incident by the police or the Kyiv City State Administration is currently available.
