The Serbian Church Will Build a Temple at the Site of the Lord's Baptism on the Jordan River
The King of Jordan Has Granted the Serbian Orthodox Church a Plot of Land for the Construction of a Church on the Bank of the Jordan River
Serbian Patriarch Porfirije visited Jordan in December 2025, where he and Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad visited the site of the Lord's Baptism on the Jordan River. During the visit, Jordan's monarch Abdullah II gifted the Serbian Orthodox Church a plot of land for the construction of an Orthodox church. This was reported by the Serbian editorial office of the SPJ, citing Jordan's ambassador and tourism promoter in the Balkans, Samer Haseeb.
It is noted that the gift from the Jordanian king served as a confirmation of the friendly relations between the Kingdom and Serbia, and the construction will help strengthen the spiritual presence of the Serbian Church in the Holy Land.
The church will be built in the likeness of the medieval monastery of Visoki Dečani — one of the symbols of Serbian spirituality. The source of inspiration was Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, who had previously visited Visoki Dečani and attended an evening service there. According to him, the architecture of the new church should convey the spirit of the ancient Serbian shrine.
As the SPJ reported, the Serbian Patriarch discussed matters of cooperation with Trump's "spiritual advisor."
